These are six easy ways you can reduce your carbon footprint in your day to day activities:
1. Practice the 5 R’s: Refuse, Reduce, Reuse, Repurpose, Recycle
Refuse plastic bags and use reusable bags every time you buy groceries. Reduce the amount of garbage you and your family produce every day. Reuse old items instead of buying new ones, like clothes, shoes and household items. Repurpose, use something old and use it for something else. 2. Drive Less and Walk more
Look for alternatives to driving, when possible walk or ride your bike to work, it not only be better for your health but the environment as well. Consider carpooling and use public transportation when possible. Enjoy your walks to the metro every day and use uber, car2go and Zipcar when need it.
3. Use Energy Efficient Appliances
If you need to purchase new home appliances, check the ones that are energy efficient (look for the energy star). Use energy efficient bulbs, refrigerators, dishwashers and clothes washers. You can also drive an energy efficient car like hybrids cars and electric cars.
4. Turn off lights
Turn off the lights, appliances, and electronics you’re not using and when you leave your home. To save energy at your home install a programmable or smart thermostat, reduce water heater use, wash clothes smartly, and run full loads.
5. Eat Less Meat
It has been estimated that 13% of U.S. greenhouse gas emissions result from the production and transport of food. Buy local and eat a more diversified diet including less meat and dairy to reduce your carbon emissions. Consume plant-based foods to avoid carbon emissions from meat production.
6. Support Clean Energy Sources
Support clean energy sources and advocate for clean alternatives to fossil fuels, such as wind, solar, and geothermal. If you can put solar panels at your home, you not only lower your electric bill, but it will also be good for the environment.
